success… sort of
so mikey’s transition to his toddler bed has been a success for the most part. i was just about to start writing a glowing report about how well he’s adjusted to it and obeyed the new rules. until i hear, “BOING! BOING!” come from one of his toys that i know isn’t close enough to his bed for him to reach without getting out of bed. guess he’s not quite ready for his nap yet.
it’s been a success in that mikey’s had no trouble giving up the crib. in fact, he seems to really love the fact that he gets to sleep in his new ‘vroom vroom’ bed. we talked it all up about how it’s a big boy bed and he’s not a little baby anymore who needs to sleep in a baby crib, but a big boy who needs to sleep in his big boy bed. yeah, like that. phil says mikey likes it better because he doesn’t have to sleep ‘behind bars’ anymore. i say the real reason is because i took out his crib bumpers two weeks ago. he was most attached to the bumper than anything and it took him longer to give that up. once the bumpers were gone, the crib held no appeal for him anymore.
i laid down the new rules the first night we tried it. i told mikey he was going to sleep in his new bed with bear. we put a few books and a toy car on a nightstand next to the bed and i told mikey he could play with those in the morning when he woke up. but, NO GET OUT OF BED UNTIL MOMMY COMES. that’s been the mantra before every nap and bedtime. the end of his bed slopes down like a little slide and he just loves sliding down and being his own man.
he’s been doing great with the sleeping part. only thing is that he wakes up TWO HOURS earlier than he used to in the crib! ahhhh! so each morning, i’ve heard him hang out in bed… for a while… then eventually i hear him make his way out to the play room. i even heard him gleefully say, “woooo!” as he passed by our bathroom yesterday morning. heh heh. so i’ve had to round him up, put him back in bed, tell him it’s too early, and that he needs to stay in bed until mommy comes. NO GET OUT OF BED UNTIL MOMMY COMES. thankfully, he’s been good about cheerfully staying there after that until i come get him.
he even stayed in bed this morning waiting for me to come! not so much with today’s nap though.
so now i need to reconfigure his daily schedule/nap with this new wakeup time of his. and get to bed earlier myself in order to get up at this new time! *yawn*
here’s mikey snoozing away the first night in his new bed

Actually, I think he’ll go back to waking up at normal time before long. Stick to your guns! ๐

Try putting him to bed a bit later at night–up to an hour later–for a couple days. And yes, I would make him stay in bed for two hours, if it takes that. Mine have all had to do that at some point. It will be so boring for him that if he’s tired he will probably fall back asleep while waiting. Once the newness of his bed wears off it won’t be so exciting for him to wake up and he’ll sleep back at normal time. That’s my advice anyway…feel free to not take it. ๐

i can see why it would be more difficult to part with the bumper. you’ve woken up to it all your life….. but then, i don’t think it’ll be too hard to let go in favor of a vroom vroom bed. and to mikey: sleep in, buddy. there’s only so many years you’ll get to sleep more than you want. trust me. sleep is your friend. it sure is mine!

i agree with barbara about waiting a bit before you start changing your sleep schedule….
