this past weekend was phil’s last one for his walk-in clinic rotation. it was a great month since he had no call and had all his weekends off, plus mlk day off. from here on out, all of his remaining rotations have call every fourth night. so we packed in as much as we could into one weekend– a family outing, a spa day for me, and a date night, to last us the next five months.
friday evening, we went to see “elmo makes music” at the target center.
we ended up with a great view from our seats.
mikey was engrossed and sat very still to watch the entire show.
allie seemed a bit confused at first as she kept looking up at me for reassurance, but then enjoyed watching the show as soon as i brought out the snacks i packed for her.
mikey’s favorite part of the show– the “elmo’s world” segment.
eight bucks a pop.
saturday morning, i got to go use the spa gift certificates phil had given me for christmas while he stayed home with the kids. i signed up for the ‘oasis package’: 30 minute spa soak, 60 minute massage, complete facial, and tea. i had never been to a spa before and was looking forward to it all month! it was nice. very nice. lorie joined me for the facial and tea. then we went and had lunch together at chipotle. it made the whole experience that much more enjoyable to share it with a dear friend!
i came home to find that phil had set mikey up with our p&s digital camera mounted on my new tripod. the boy really got in to taking pictures and was all business as he moved the tripod around to get the best shot.
some pictures from mikey’s photo shoot:
saturday evening, the schnells agreed to babysit our kiddos so that we could go out on a real date. yahoo!!! phil planned a great evening at the mall of america for us– dinner at napa valley grille followed by a couple of roller coaster rides in the mall’s amusement park. just because we could, being kid-free and all!
enjoying our grown-up dinner in a cozy little booth together.
we decided to be a bit adventurous and ordered the artisan cheese plate which included gruyere, blue, morbier, and goat cheeses, along with almonds, fresh honey, cranberries, apple slices, and toast.
for dinner, phil ordered the grilled venison.
and i had the seafood trois: blue crab ravioli, grilled prawns, and sea scallops.
and for dessert, we had milk chocolate pot de creme which was soft chocolate topped with fresh cream and raspberries.
walking around the mall, we happened upon the world’s largest indoor tulip show. very refreshing to see all the bright colors in the dead of winter.
one of our two ‘thrill’ rides. both were pretty tame, but still fun nonetheless!

What a great weekend! Your children are so well-behaved to be able to sit through a show…its a reflection on yours and Phil’s parenting skills. Hopefully we will do as well as you in raising Matthew!

I would get a professional massage every week if I could. But you’re right–always more fun to share spa days with a friend. Looks like Mikey is taking after his shutterbug mom! 🙂

Impressive shots by Mikey! Who knew he had such a skill! Great recap of your weekend, too. Glad you guys were able to end Phil’s “easy” half of the year with style. That cheese plate looks awfully fancy! And, yeah, you guys do make Minnesota look like great fun…even in the midst of our “artic blast”.
