old blog

he did good!

so it was my birthday yesterday.  i turned 30.  how i can be that old?!

phil is currently finishing up his rotation in surgery working over 80 hours every week.  add to that trying to get our house up for sale, two sick children, and me trying to finish up my observation work (work from home i do with my former employer), and you get the idea– it’s been stressful around here.  i wasn’t sure we’d be able to do anything special for this birthday with everything else going on.

but phil managed to pull through once again.  he had requested the day off and had planned a wonderful day full of surprises for me.

phil hurried us out the door in the morning but wouldn’t tell me anything about the plans for the day.

man of mystery…

after a quick stop to pick up breakfast to go at burger king, phil dropped me off in front of solimar wellness spa where he handed me a little bag he had packed, handed me a little slip of paper to give to the receptionist, and told me “you have an appointment at 10am, i’ll pick you up at 12 o’clock.  bye!” and then drove off.  i found out later that phil took the kids to the zoo while they waited for me.

i went into the spa and thankfully, the receptionist seemed to know what i was doing there.  she said to me, “i spoke on the phone with your husband.  it was fun talking to him and he planned a wonderful day here for you!”  i was touched as i thought about phil picking what services he thought i’d enjoy.

he signed me up for a hydrotherapy muscle soothing soak, an hour massage, a pedicure, and a hair wash and style.  ahhhh…  i think i got over the self-consciousness i felt the first time i got a massage because this one felt great!

it ended up taking an hour longer than originally planned (there was a lot of down time in between each of the services), but phil patiently waited for me in car with the kids.  i don’t know how patient the kiddos were, though!

we headed home for the kids’ afternoon nap.  at home, phil handed me “the pursuit of happyness” to watch while he slipped out to run a few more mysterious errands.  he remembered that i’ve been wanting to see this movie since we saw previews for it back in december.

after the kids woke up, phil got us all back in the car for more birthday fun.  turned out he had booked us a room at the radisson hotel just down the road from our place.  since mikey and allie were sick, he couldn’t get a babysitter for them, so he improvised with room service!

my party crew…

after dinner, we got into bathing suits and played in the hotel’s kiddie pool and spa.  would have been sooo nice to sleep in that king-size sleep number bed, but alas, it was time to return home and back to normal life.

phil had one more surprise up his sleeve though– yummy desserts from byerlys.

mikey wanted to help me blow out the candles.  thankfully, phil didn’t try to be funny and light thirty candles for us to blow out!

thanks for a grrreat day, honey!  you’ve managed to make it a special day full of sweet reminders of why i love you.
