weekend warrior
phil’s always been so good about never letting tiredness stop him from spending time with us. he had call on friday (working an overnight shift), but didn’t let that get in the way of our weekend fun! he actually got a few hours off on friday morning and decided that would be a good time for us to revisit the long beach aquarium. it was much less crowded this time, even with packs of field trippers there.
here are the kids and i by the shark lagoon…
when all of a sudden, this stingray tries to leap out of the water! maybe he thought mikey had some food for him? yeah, i think mikey and i both screamed. but no permanent damage done, mikey dipped his hand right back in the water after the stingray swam away.
allie was fascinated by these large black and red insects. future entymologist? i cringe at the thought. i hate bugs. but more power to her for having no fear!
it was cool to see this school of fish swim around and around in circles together.
then, after having stayed up all night working, phil came home saturday morning and off we went to the orange county fair! i drove, he slept on the way there and back. poor guy (but he insisted that we still go!).
the first adventure was riding this school bus that shuttled us to the fair. the kids loved it and we saved 5 bucks on parking! but as it turned out, the fair wasn’t very crowded and there were plenty of parking spaces in the main lot. we were totally expecting that there would be hoardes of people there. guess there’s too many other options of things to do in the oc…
our first order of business at the fair was to go into the petting zoo. going in was free, but the little cup of food pellets was $2. my inner cheapness prevented me from buying the pellets since mikey can feed goats all he wants at my dad’s farm. but we lucked out since there were pellets spilled all over the ground. i don’t think this goat cared about the 5-second rule (or is it 3?).
then mikey and phil went in to see “hercules”. (herculees, herculeees!)
the weather was nice and sunny (not too hot), but this cool mister thingy was still quite enjoyable.
cool sand sculpture.
and of course, we had to try out the food! we decided to see what deep-fried avocados tasted like. definitely not as good as deep-fried candy bars. man, we sure missed minnesota’s deep-fried-everything-on-a-stick!
though mikey thought this cotton candy wasn’t bad…
we were sad to think we wouldn’t be going to a fair this year, and the oc fair wasn’t nearly as big as the mn state fair, but it was just enough fair for the four of us. ha ha, that was quite the use of the word “fair”!

what a good daddy and husband. i still keep getting caught off guard reading your posts…thinking i’m gonna read about another tsai adventure in a far off place…and realizing it’s all local things that i could actually go do too…..well, not really right now…but eventually. i’ll keep all these ideas in mind!

Looks like a great time, we will plan on eating something deep fried in your honor when we go to the fair this year.

that bag of cotton candy looks bigger than mikey. 🙂 you guys are battling jenny’s family for the title of “party family”. 🙂

What a model husband/father! Sacrificing sleep for fun with his loving family. I just don’t know how he does it…and then he snaps a stellar action shot of you three and a sting ray! Guess the lack of sleep hasn’t affected his reaction time! Amazing… Oh, and I’m glad to hear the MN fair still has the top slot for fairs in the ‘Tsai fun book’. At least we have that going for us out here in the arctic.

Cute pictures! I can’t believe how big both mikey and allie look. Pig tails? where has the baby gone? 🙂 Yes, the MN state fair is pretty impressive and I have my allotment of cheese curds every year although the fried pickle on the stick is pretty good.
