road trip
we decided to hit the open road for a day trip to san diego over the labor day weekend. except the road wasn’t quite so open what with all the other cars on the road apparently with the same idea. the extra traffic added an hour to our drive. we had been deciding between heading north to santa barbara or south to san diego, chose san diego, and realized only after we got there that maybe we should have headed north since we were in the middle of an extreme heat wave and uh, heading south would only make it warmer! oops, will have to figure that in next time… so instead of san diego’s usual gentle, balmy breeze, we stepped out into sweltering heat. even when we were walking on the boardwalk right next to the water! made our plan to enjoy some outdoor sightseeing and window shopping a tad less enjoyable. but we tried to make the most of it anyhow!
we started out in seaport village, located in san diego’s big bay area.
staying cool with the sunshades on…
we came across a man in a wheelchair flying these giant kites by the waterside. very pretty against the blue sky. though there wasn’t much of a breeze in the dead heat, so he had giant fans blowing to create some wind.
fish out of water.
the sign says it all. there was this guy balancing rocks on top of each other. so crazy looking! at first i thought he was doing it just for fun, but then noticed he had a tip jar out. wonder if that’s his day job?
then it was time for lunch. but the kids were more interested in feeding the pigeons than themselves!
we decided that we’d had enough of the heat and piled back in the car to see if it was any cooler directly on the beach.
here’s mikey trying to navigate our way to coronado beach.
after we finally found a parking spot and made the loooong walk to the beach, we discovered two things. it was still swelteringly hot. and it was crowded. ugh. but the good news is that the water felt grrrreat!
footloose and fancy-free…
mikey was having the time of his life, splashing around and chasing seagulls.
allie enjoyed the cool water for a few minutes too before deciding it was better when daddy was holding her.
allie and i headed to our blanket to sit down and rest while daddy and mikey continued playing in the water. she was quite content to sit and play with her shoe- one of her favorite things to do. such a shoe girl already!
i’m sure mikey would have been happy to stay and play at the beach for the rest of the day, but it was time to head back home. here he is getting in a few last moments playing with the sand while we packed up. no mistaking that he’s definitely a beach boy!

mikey looks like a stud w/ those sunglasses!

mikey looks so much like Phil in his sunglasses picture.
next time you head south, think about visiting the Birch Aquarium in La Jolla. it’s an incredible aquarium, great for kids, and reasonably priced!

one cool dude, mikey. Allie, you are pretty as usual. we go to SB zoo quite a bit, only 90 minutes away and pretty cheap destination.

I stayed in Coronado a couple springs ago; it is so beautiful. I was lucky enough to stay in the historic Hotel del Coronado. I think you can see it from Coronado Beach. Looks like you had a fun time at the beach!

great pics! i was pretty surprised that little Allie wasn’t drenched with sweat, since she’s such a hotty. maybe she’s adjusting to CA.

I agree that Mikey definitely looks like a mini-Phil with those sunglasses on! And, Allie…she’s growing up too fast! Glad you guys are enjoying the beach. I do have a question, though…what is all that brown stuff on the beach on top of the sand? Seaweed?

oh I know you have thousands. I’ve been sorting through your xanga pages picking and saving them all!
like i choose them according to the requirements of the assignment. Like this week’s hw, I need a photo with a decent degree of contrast. So I chose the photo you have of Allie with your dad because I can play with the light on Allie’s smmoth skin and your dad’s wrinkly one. Fun!
