breakfast for dinner
one of my hopes for the kids is that they will become lifelong readers and fall in love with great stories. so i try to surround them with good books, take them to storytime at the library, listen to books on tape in the car, even read up on books lists to find the best of the best in children’s books. because ultimately, i want them to love reading the bible and becoming intimately aquainted with our wonderful God. i want them to find it very natural to always be reading His word because that’s how the Lord teaches and communicates with us!
so this evening, i was reading “if you give a pig a pancake” to mikey. i purposely chose that one instead of “if you give a mouse a cookie” because i knew what would happen next– mikey would immediately insist on eating whatever was talked about in the book. and i was right. nothing would do for the boy but to have pancakes RIGHT THEN.
since phil is on call tonight, i figured it would be fun to have breakfast for dinner. i cooked up some pancakes, scrambled eggs, turkey bacon, and served it along with orange juice and applesauce (gotta slip in some fruit, right?).
i even let the kids eat a couple pancakes with melted butter on them before we all sat down to eat.
mikey thought eating pancakes while looking at the book was the best thing ever.
later at the table, mikey declared, “i LOVE your pancakes!” followed by, “and i LOVE you!” mikey meant what he said about the pancakes because he ended up eating FIVE of them tonight! definitely a first for him since he usually doesn’t really like pancakes. (who doesn’t like pancakes?!) which makes me think he meant what he said about me, too!
allie also didn’t seem to mind the breakfast-for-dinner concept, either.
tomorrow, we’ll be reading “if you give a moose a muffin.” guess i better go hunt down a good muffin recipe tonight!

My little cousins love those books! I like breakfast for dinner sometimes, too.

My heart is melting…they are too cute! I’m trying to get Matthew to become a lifelong reader. Not much success…but he likes to eat his books. Hopefully he will learn to enjoy reading books someday soon.
