maritime museum

this past weekend, we got a chance to visit the maritime museum in san pedro.  i had my doubts at first as to whether or not the kids would actually enjoy this outing, but to my pleasant surprise, we all had a good time looking at all the miniature ships and various museum-y things.  i also learned a couple new facts about phil– he’s fascinated by ships in bottles, and he used to build model war ships.  with the end purpose of burning them in battle.    that guy never ceases to amaze (er, surprise?) me.

big, strong daddy!

who knew there are so many different ways to tie a knot?  this is only about a quarter of the entire display of knots!

this model ship was used in the 1972 movie The Poseidon Adventure, weighs one ton, but actually floats!

there was also an outdoor area in the back of the museum that had this random cannon with really intricate designs all over it just sitting out there:

what a great family outing……Your pics are always so well taken…..BTW, what kind of camera are you using?…I’m shopping around for a good one that takes awesome pics as yours……i’m leaning on Canon and Nikkon or Olympics…..Hubby wants me to wait till he comes home, which is VERY SOON………..anyways, never hurt to explore places to test if the kids would love it…and with the weather where you at, i’m sure anywhere the kids will do great…….Sigh~ I hate summer but I love California weather…………..

nice pictures!  i was pleasantly surprised with the museum the last time i visited as well.  hey, another cool place that’s in the area is the Point Vicente Interpretive Center.  there’s a cool native garden outside, awesome views of Catalina/ocean, and cool exhibits inside on things like tidepools, whales, native americans.  it’s free too!
