Derby Cars

We recently visited the Petersen Automotive Musuem which has a fun kids’ area on the third floor complete with pine derby cars and racetracks.  So naturally, as soon as we were leaving, the kids (mainly Mikey) asked if we could make wooden race cars at home.

A quick stop at Lowe’s and we found a teeny, tiny display of wood toy car kits.  Not derby race cars, but close enough.

“Hey Lauren, wanna do a project?”

Arranging the pieces just so.  The bricks were there because it was kind of a windy day.

Then Daddy came along and rearranged the pieces.  Who’s being all OCD now?  Twasn’t me!

Out came the spray paint!

Which was kinda stinky.

But still, they each wanted to give it a try.

Some required a little more assistance than others.

Some were way more excited about their turn to spray paint than others.

Some were delighted with the bright pink paint spraying out.

And some were very determined to get every last bit of that wood sprayed with pink paint.

Every. Last. Bit. Pinkified.

Then Daddy came along and tried to smooth out the very heavily sprayed pink paint.  With a green leaf.

Which Lauren immediately wanted to have.

And if one sister has a green leaf with pink paint on it, then invariably the other sister will want one too.  This is the way with sisters who love all things pink.

Aww yeah, my very own pink green leaf!

Then we left ’em alone to dry in the sun.

And did what we could to pass the time.

Which turned out to be a lot of time, since they were, uh, pretty thorough with the spray painting.

That was her orange wristband from the museum.  She was the only one who wanted to keep it on the rest of the day.

The next morning, I found him hard at work nailing sixteen little black wheels into place.

And ta da!  Their finished masterpieces.

Plus a yellow bus for Jonah.
