One of the items on Mikey’s summer bucket list was to go bike riding. Which coincidentally worked well with an item on my unofficial summer bucket list that existed only in my head- to finally get around to teaching Allie to ride her bike without training wheels.
The girl was long overdue to learn how.
And happily enough, both items got checked off on Father’s Day.
Dad and son getting the bikes ready for riding. Please note the cleaned-out-garage-enough-to-sit-in-and-tinker-with-bikes. That was another item on my unofficial summer bucket list that existed only in my head. Check that bad boy off.
One, and I mean one, quick picture before they all scampered off eager to get on with the bike riding. That shirt was our father’s day gift to him this year. It’s his favorite color.
So we loaded up both vehicles, me and kids in the van, Phil and four bikes in the Forester, and we headed over to the kids’ school to get this show on the road. She started off kind of wobbly and I had my doubts that she’d be able to learn in one evening.
Thankfully she had the best dad ever to lean into. Also the elbow and knee pads (her idea) offered additional reassurance.
Still she was pretty excited to learn.
A few turns with her daddy hanging on tightly to the back of her shirt…
Then the steadying hand moved to her arm.
Still all smiles as she got the hang of this thing.
And then…
she…
got it!
In case you didn’t know, he’s got a strong streak of hamminess in him.
So proud of my scrappy little girl. Amazingly, she learned to ride her bike in about ten minutes. Definite upside to waiting so long to teach her.
Soon she was riding around with her big brother.
I’ve heard it said that hamminess tends to run in families.
Because there appears to be a strong genetic component at work here.
I just don’t even know, man.
What’s this now? The hamminess doesn’t come from just one side of the family?
Our kids are goners. There is no escaping the hamminess.
Especially
when
this guy
is
your
dad.
When this is the case,
it’s best to just roll with it.
Happy Father’s Day, honey. We love you and thank God for you. Thank you for being the best dad ever to our four monkeys. They love you so, so much and so do I!
