Jonah and I found ourselves alone at home one leisurely summer afternoon. I forget now where the others had all gone. It’s amazing how quiet the house gets when we go from four kids down to one. And even though I had several other things I was hoping to get done, they all quickly fell by the wayside as soon as Jonah came trotting up to me with his little smile and simple “Mommy, play?”
I had to say yes. And I had to grab my camera. Because those two things are pretty much synonymous with me. If I’m gonna be made to play, I’m gonna capture the moment. Because they’re irresistible when they’re playing.
First, we rigged up a race track that went from the office down the hallway and into the boys’ room. Behind Jonah you will see a laundry pile which happened to be one of the several other things I was hoping to get done that day. Not to be.
He had gathered up several cars and dumped them into my lap. Then he required me to hand him one car at a time and with surgeon-like precision, he’d arrange each one on the track just so before releasing them.
That little smile of his.
There they go!
Once all the cars were gone from my lap, he’d run to the boys’ room to gather them back up to do it all over again.
I once showed him how his shirt handily doubles as a pouch to carry many items at once. He has since made great use of his pouch ever since.
See? And a peek at his outie belly button? Bonus.
The best possible way to enjoy a quiet afternoon at home with just one, I’d say.
Adorable. And yes, the best way you could have spent your afternoon. I need to remember that sometimes, too, when I have a million and one things I need to do.
