Summers are for Sleepovers

One of Mikey’s best friends is moving away. Our two families have been very good friends since the time the boys were three years old and in preschool together. We’ve walked through a lot together in the years since. I can hardly think about what it’ll be like once they’re really gone. It’s an unfamiliar feeling being the ones not moving away. I don’t like it.

And I can say truthfully that I know God has good things planned in this move for them. I believe that He will work in and through them and I’m excited for their new adventure ahead. But still, I don’t like it.

Change and I, we’re still working to find a way to peacefully coexist.

It’s a slow process.

And I don’t even begin to know how to help Mikey through one of the first losses in his young life. He’s been getting quiet after each playdate (excuse me, “hang out”) with his friend and mentions how sad he feels that they’re moving away. I just tell him I’m sad too and that it’s okay to feel that way. It’s okay to miss his friend but also to remember that moving away doesn’t have to mean their friendship has to end. We’ll just have to find ways to help them stay in touch.

So for this last summer together, we’ve tried to give the boys lots of opportunities to see each other. Opportunities to share some laughs and make a few more memories- and what better way to do that than with a summer sleepover? In a tent?! In the backyard!

I seriously had my doubts that they'd make it through the whole night out there in the tent. So I told them there was a backup plan to sleep in the house if they decided to come in at night. Turns out I needn't have worried. Not only did all of them (minus Jonah who was HEARTBROKEN over being made to sleep in his own bed that night) tough it out in the tent, but two of them stayed up the ENTIRE night out there.

And what's a summer sleepover without some marshmallow roasting over an open fire?

They kept talking about getting "a perfect char" on their marshmallow. And if by "char" they meant "burnt to a crisp", well then I'd say they did perfect it.

So thankful for this crew of buddies. And so sad to have to say goodbye to one of them.

PS- Staying up all (or most of) the night means you are highly likely to fall asleep during the movie (The Incredibles) the next morning which further leaves you defenseless against any "decorating" that may then occur.
